Venezuelan Yangel Herrera’s late stoppage time goal saw Girona beat Celta Vigo 1-0 this Friday to secure their place at the top of the Spanish football league.
At their Montilivi stadium, Girona continued their fantastic La Liga campaign, reaching matchday 11 with nine wins, one draw and only one defeat against colossus Real Madrid.
Girona has 28 points, three more than Real Madrid and four more than Barcelona, the team that will play Spanish football’s El Clasico on Saturday.
The Catalans’ dominance was intense, ending the first half with 70% possession, but it was only towards the end that they really managed to win thanks to a well-built game that Herrera finished off with a powerful long-range strike.
Clearly in crisis, Rafa Benitez’s Celta remain in 18th place, first in the relegation zone, with just six points.
