The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says the past three weeks have been the deadliest on record for journalists. Information provided by the Associated Press shows that at least 29 journalists have died while covering the war between Israel and Palestine.
Since the conflict began on October 7, 24 Palestinian journalists, four Israelis and one Lebanese have been killed. Eight more journalists were injured, and nine were missing or taken hostage.
CPJ also criticizes the cessation of Internet access and communications in the Gaza Strip as a “news blackout” that compromises the public’s ability to “know and understand what is happening in this conflict.”
“This can have serious consequences, as the lack of independent and factual information can be filled with deadly propaganda and disinformation,” he adds.
The committee also emphasizes that journalists must be respected and protected in accordance with international humanitarian law, and that attacks against them or media infrastructure constitute a possible war crime.
