A man from Illinois, USA, accused of murder and hate crimes for stabbing to death a six-year-old Muslim boy and wounding the child’s mother, pleaded not guilty this Monday before a judge during an arraignment hearing.
According to police, citing ReutersJoseph Chuba, 71, was the family’s landlord and persecuted them because of their religion. According to the same source, the attack is being treated as a hate crime caused by the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Defense attorney George Lenard entered a plea on behalf of Chub, who did not take the stand, according to the prosecution. NBC News from Chicago.
According to ReutersThe man is accused of fatally stabbing 6-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoum and wounding the boy’s mother, 32-year-old Canaan Shanin, on Oct. 14 in Plainfield, about 40 miles southwest of Chicago.
The boy was stabbed 26 times with a military-style knife with a 7-inch saw blade, according to a Will County Sheriff’s Office statement cited by Reuters.
The suspect remains in jail without bail. The Justice Department has opened a federal investigation into the death of a six-year-old boy.
