Children and women made up about 70 percent of the more than 8,300 Palestinian civilian casualties in the war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas reported as of Monday by the United Nations, the UN announced Tuesday.
According to the daily report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, known by its acronym OCHA, the dead included 3,747 children and 2,062 women.
On the Israeli side, OCHA reported more than 1,400 reported deaths, of which 30 were children among the 1,135 victims already identified, mostly from the attack that Hamas carried out inside Israel on 7 October.
The report also mentions 21,048 wounded on the Palestinian side and 5,431 in Israel, as well as 1.4 million displaced in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian casualties resulted from Israel’s response to the Hamas attack, especially the almost continuous bombing of the Gaza Strip.
Situated between Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea, the Gaza Strip has an area of approximately 360 square kilometers and a population of 2.3 million people.
Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union, has controlled Gaza since 2007, when it expelled the Fatah party, which rules the West Bank, from the territory.
The UN report emphasizes that so far it has “failed to provide independent, complete and verified data on the number of victims.”
“Current data has been provided by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip and Israeli authorities and is awaiting further verification,” UN OCHA said.
The UN also noted that 26 trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered Gaza on Monday through the Rafah border post with Egypt.
He believes aid remains far short of needs given the gravity of the situation, even though an increase in aid flowing into Gaza has been recorded over the past two days, according to Spanish agency EFE.
The UN also said 13 hospitals remained open in the north and south of the Gaza Strip on Monday, a day when water supplies were again cut off for unknown reasons.
The pipeline carrying water from Israel to the center of the Palestinian territory had not been repaired as of Monday, he added.
