Hamas’s vast network of tunnels under much of Gaza poses a major threat to Israeli forces. Built over more than two decades, it stretches over 500 kilometers and reaches a depth of 80 meters in some places. There are command centers and barracks, infirmaries, weapons depots and missile launch points, as well as numerous traps against any invader.
Known in Israel as the “Gaza Metro”, this veritable underground city includes, among other things, supply, smuggling (on the Egyptian border) and infiltration (into Israeli territory) tunnels. It is in this tangle, called the “web,” that Hamas forces, their leaders, and more than 200 hostages captured in the October 7 attacks are hiding, adding an additional layer of complexity to the Israeli military operation. will be carried out by special forces and Yahalom’s “weasels”, a unit of the Combat Engineer Corps specially trained to find, clear and destroy these tunnels.
