The Pope has announced that he will attend COP28 in Dubai in early December.

Pope Francis, who has increased his warnings about global warming, announced this Wednesday in an interview that he will attend the COP28 climate summit to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in early December.

“I’m going to Dubai. I think I’ll leave from December 1 to 3. I’ll be there for three days,” the leader of the Catholic Church told Italian public television channel Rai1.

COP28 will take place from November 30 to December 12 in the United Arab Emirates, bringing together nearly 200 countries to discuss actions and goals in the context of climate change.

“It is very important to go to COP28 and get impressive results,” CEO Al Suwaidi told Europa Press in October, for which the climate process needs people with technical skills to move forward.

The World Summit representative, who was born in the United Arab Emirates, participated as his country’s negotiator at COP21 in Paris in 2015, which produced the Climate Agreement, which is the current framework for action to combat the climate emergency.

“In some ways, we’re having the same conversations we were having back then. I’m surprised because when I left Paris I thought we had already achieved a political result. Now, to move forward, climate summits do not need people. Like me, the process does not need negotiators, but rather technical specialists who are responsible for implementation, and today we do not have that,” he warned at the same time, insisting on the importance so that the next international meeting “produces results”.

Majid Al Suwaidi criticized the fact that there is a community of people, especially young people, who are truly interested in finding solutions to the climate problem, while countries are “stuck” in a political cycle despite already knowing that the planet is “not on track” towards achieving the Paris goals.”

Limiting the rise in global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, he repeated, is “possible” since the recipe is known and includes, for example, the proposal defended this week by the International Energy Agency in Madrid.

“We know what we need to do to achieve the Paris goal, we have the technology. That is why it is very important that the parties at COP28 have honest conversations,” he said.

Regarding the energy transition, he stressed that greenhouse gas emissions need to be reduced by 22 gigatons, so this Wednesday he warned of the importance of building the energy system of the future.

“Energy decarbonization cannot happen overnight. The path outlined in Paris involves increasing energy efficiency through various formulas such as carbon capture and storage,” he emphasized.

Majid Al Suwaidi believes that developed countries are not delivering on promised climate investments and that the world is “at the same point as in 2015”, and calls for a transformation of the international financial system and institutions.

“We need to focus on people’s problems, think about how we can adapt in a way that is fair for everyone,” the Emirati diplomat said, saying it was critical to achieve a better food system, better health, more sustainable crops and a reduction vulnerability of the population to climate change.

Regarding COP28, he promised that no group would be excluded from climate negotiations.
