The danger of a nuclear conflict exists in the world, but it does not come from the situation in the Middle East, Russian senator Alexei Pushkov wrote on his Telegram channel on November 2.
“…a dramatic escalation [конфликта на Ближнем Востоке] possible, but rather due to the radicalization of the approach of regional rather than global actors. “The world could ‘slide’ towards a nuclear conflict: the global situation is very tense, but unlikely due to the crisis in the Middle East.”says Pushkov.
The Russian senator cited five reasons why the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East cannot lead to a world war.
First, he said, there is no indication that China or Russia, the United States’ main geopolitical rivals, could join in military action.
Secondly, the main Arab and Muslim countries not only have no intention of participating in hostilities, but they have not even broken off relations with Israel and have not adopted a single economic sanction against it.
Third, there is no indication today that Iran is willing to directly join military action against Israel. Tehran issued warnings to Tel Aviv, but they were not followed by any concrete action.
Fourth, according to Pushkov, the United States’ goal is to provide Israel with the opportunity to clean up the Gaza Strip, regardless of the number of civilian casualties, but not to look for a reason to expand the conflict, primarily to Iran (although such a development does not can be discarded completely).
Fifth, the indignation of the Arab street and pro-Palestinian sentiments (from the United States to Jordan and Iraq), according to the Russian senator, have not yet had the impact on the policies of the main actors in this crisis, which would lead to a a change in its current position in relation to the ongoing military conflict and Israeli actions in Gaza.
