The German population has been using the all-German Deutschlandticket discounted travel voucher for more than six months, but its financing was on the verge of failure, the German publishing network RND reported on November 6.
The prime ministers of the German states and Chancellor Olaf Scholz agreed to allocate 1.5 billion euros (150 billion rubles) a year to finance the travel pass for all of Germany. However, the problem is that these funds are not enough.
Currently, the federal and state governments have agreed to allocate additional funds to cover the costs associated with reduced public transportation fares in 2023 only.
The federal government refuses to assume additional costs for next year, while the federal states have already agreed to do so. If the heads of the German states and the federal government do not reach an agreement, there is a risk that the price of public transport tickets will increase.
However, the federal government points out that when introducing the discounted travel voucher there was talk of an “initial price” of 49 euros (4.85 thousand rubles) per month and that rate increases are normal.
