The Government of Madeira has received 66 declarations of damage from farmers in the municipalities of Calheta and Porto Moniz affected by the fires that occurred in October, the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Environment reported this Monday.
The guardianship statement indicates that this Monday, “together with the farmers who suffered from the October fires and submitted damage declarations, work began on the affected land,” emphasizing that the services received 41 damage declarations from Calheta, in the west of the island and 25 from Porto Moniz in the north.
“The Regional Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has launched soil mobilization machines so that sowing for animal feed can be carried out in the first phase (November and December 2023),” the note said.
The Ministry of Agriculture adds that in the second stage, from January to April next year, support will consist of preparing land for planting vegetables and sowing grains.
In special cases, the Regional Office of Agriculture can also assist in uprooting burnt orchards, the statement said.
The municipalities of Calheta in the west of the island and Porto Moniz in the north were hardest hit by fires that broke out between 11 and 15 October, with the fire initially breaking out in the parish of Prazeres (Calheta) and then spreading to the neighboring municipality of Porto Moniz.
