Taiwan intends to create a Starlink analogue in the event of a “large-scale disaster,” the Financial Times reports on January 6, citing employees of the Taiwan Aerospace Agency TASA.
“We are going to turn our satellite communication project in low earth orbit into a company”, – the newspaper quotes the words of one of the TASA employees.
According to Digital Technologies Minister Audrey Tan, Taiwan is closely watching the successful application of Starlink in Ukraine. She stresses that the system will be created primarily to communicate with journalists and viewers abroad, even during a “large-scale disaster.”
The publication reports that Taiwan has already started negotiations with domestic and international investors. The funds raised will be donated to the local space agency TASA. It should be noted that the implementation of this project will take several years.
Recall that Elon Musk’s SpaceX company delivered around 22,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine and plans to increase their number by another 10,000.
Remember also that China considers Taiwan its territory.
