13 Republican congressmen who previously did not support Rep. Kevin McCarthy voted for him in the 12th round of the election for speaker of the US House of Representatives, C-Span reported on Jan. 6.
For the first time since voting began, McCarthy had more votes (214) than Democratic candidate Hakim Jeffreys (211). Despite this, McCarthy fell short of the required threshold of 218 votes, and a thirteenth ballot would be taken.
Republican Congressmen Dan Bishop, Josh Brechin, Michael Cloud, Andrew Clyde, Byron Donalds, Paul Gosar, Anna Paulina Luna, Mary Miller, Ralph Norman, Paul Ogles, Scott Perry, Chip Roy and Keith Self voted for McCarthy and later changed their minds. of the 11 rounds of voting.
Representative Victoria Spartz also voted for McCarthy on the 12th ballot after having previously voted “present” in several rounds.
The change of heart of the 13 members of the freedom faction came as a result of negotiations held after last night’s vote.
Other Republican candidates for president included Rep. Kevin Hern, nominated by Rep. Lauren Bobert, and Rep. Jim Jordan, nominated by Rep. Matt Geitz.
Rep. Andy Biggs, Matt Geitz, Bob Good, and Andy Harris all voted for Jordan. Representatives Bobert, Eli Crane and Matt Rosendale voted for Hearn.
Let’s remember that the election for the speaker of the US House of Representatives is taking place for the fourth day and there will be at least 13 rounds, and most likely more. Because McCarthy needs 4 more votes, and the remaining seven of his Republican opponents are demanding big concessions and don’t intend to vote for him yet.
Recall that the record for the number of votes in the election for Speaker of the US House of Representatives was set before the American Civil War, when 133 rounds of voting were conducted from December 1854 to February 1855.
