NATO suspends application of treaty to conventional forces due to Russian withdrawal

NATO announced Tuesday that it would suspend the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe following Russia’s final withdrawal from the convention.

In their statement, the countries belonging to the Atlantic Alliance condemned Russia’s withdrawal from this treaty, as well as the “aggressive war against Ukraine, which runs counter to the goals” of this convention.

“Russia’s withdrawal is only the latest in a series of actions that systematically undermine Euro-Atlantic security,” the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) added.

Therefore, “and as a consequence, the Allies intend to suspend the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe for as long as necessary, consistent with their rights under international law,” adding that “the decision is supported by all NATO countries.” allies.”

From NATO’s perspective, the principles of “reciprocity, transparency, compliance, verification and consent” are at stake.

“The allies reaffirm their ongoing commitment to reducing military risk and preventing conflicts,” the military-political organization concluded.

The treaty set equal limits on the number of tanks, armored fighting vehicles, heavy artillery, fighter aircraft and attack helicopters that NATO and the Warsaw Pact could deploy between the Atlantic Ocean and the Urals.

The original document was signed by 22 NATO countries and the Soviet Union, but an updated version nine years later, reflecting NATO expansion and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, is no longer ratified.
