The Socialists on Tuesday cooled expectations of a quick amnesty agreement with pro-independence Carles Puigdemont and acknowledged that Pedro Sánchez’s ascension as prime minister may no longer happen this week.
Late last week, things appeared to be moving towards an agreement, but Puigdemont’s last-minute demand for the amnesty to be extended to other “side processes” of the independence movement caused negotiations to stall. The situation worsened on Monday after the National Auditorium accused Puigdemont of terrorism and the Socialists began to show distrust. It is now said that it is impossible to advance the “time horizon” for completing the negotiations, and there are even those who doubt that an agreement will be reached. On Tuesday, speaking about plans for the next legislature, government spokeswoman Isabel Rodriguez dropped an explanation “if it comes to fruition.”
Meanwhile, popular protest over Sánchez’s concessions to independents continues to grow, and on Monday evening there were even clashes between police and protesters during a protest in front of the PSOE headquarters in Madrid. At least ten people were injured and three were detained.
