Nobel Peace Prize laureate ends hunger strike after examination in hospital

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner from Iran, Narges Mohammadi, ended her hunger strike that began three days ago after being examined in hospital, according to a statement released this Thursday by her family.

“After being transferred to a hospital without the obligatory headscarf and returning to the women’s ward [da prisão]I have stopped my hunger strike,” Mohammadi said in a statement posted by his family on the social network Instagram.

Iranian authorities said on Wednesday that the activist was taken to hospital to have her lungs and heart checked in accordance with “rules and protocols” after she was denied a doctor’s visit two weeks ago because she did not wear an Islamic hijab.

51-year-old Mohammadi, held in Evin prison in Tehran, denied this version and assured that she did not wear a “hijab.”

“I went from prison to hospital without the mandatory burqa, wearing a coat and skirt and with dozens of security forces agents,” he said.

“If the Islamic Republic believes that not wearing the veil is in line with rules and protocols, then it should certainly be the same for all Iranian women,” he added.

Mohammadi also said authorities stationed security forces at the hospital’s entrance, in the parking lot, in the elevator and in the hallway leading to the doctor’s office to examine her.

During the hospital visit, the activist was not allowed to speak to her lawyer or family.

Mohammadi, who suffered a heart attack in 2022, began a hunger strike on Monday to protest the lack of medical care in prison and the mandatory wearing of the Islamic veil after she was refused admission to hospital for examination because she refused to wear a hijab.

Last month, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Mohammadi the prestigious prize “for his struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and for promoting human rights and freedom for all.”

The activist, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for “spreading propaganda against the state,” has been in several Iranian prisons in recent years.

The journalist has not seen her children, who have been in Paris for eight years and have been in solitary confinement for a long time. His activism cost him 13 arrests, five sentences totaling 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.
