A discussion about the men’s “relationship” with the same woman led to the attempted murder of one of them, 80, by his previous partner, 70, in a village in Celorico da Beira. The crime took place in the home of the victim, the suspect was detained by the Judicial Police of Guarda and is in preventive detention.
The victim was shot in the leg by a neighbor as he tried to close the kitchen door. After firing two shots from a pistol converted to a 6.35 mm caliber, the suspect “left the area” and hid “the weapon near his brother’s house.”
The crime occurred in the early hours of August last year and the suspect was arrested the next day in possession of several firearms and ammunition.
Brought to court, he admitted to some of the alleged facts, but denied intent to kill and insisted that he simply wanted to “cause fear” in his neighbor “as he had been the subject of death threats” and wanted “him to leave him alone.”
The suspect is charged with attempted murder and appealed the preventive detention to the Coimbra court, but judges upheld the decision in a ruling on October 25 because there was a “serious risk of continued criminal activity and disruption of order.”
