Australian authorities announced this Saturday that a “cybersecurity incident of national significance”, the causes of which are unknown, has led to the closure of four important Australian seaports.
“The Australian Government is aware of a cyber incident affecting port operator DP World Australia. The government is coordinating the government’s response to this incident,” Australian Home Affairs Minister Claire O’Neill said today in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Due to the incident, the cause of which is under investigation, DP World Australia has suspended all port operations at the country’s four main ports, namely Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle.
National cyber security co-ordinator Air Marshal Darren Goldie said this “cyber incident of national significance” was reported on Friday evening and indicated that “this suspension is likely to last a number of days” which will “impact the movement of goods”. in the country and abroad.”
“Our priority is to help DP World Australia resolve the incident so that access to ports operating across the country can be restored,” Darren told X after a meeting of the National Coordination Mechanism and the National Shipping Agency’s Emergency Management Directorate.
Darren added that Australian authorities have a “commitment” to resolve the incident as quickly as possible and are working with the port operator to provide advice and technical assistance to ensure operations can resume as quickly as possible.
The Australian Federal Police announced it had launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
