Traffic through the Khunjerab mountain pass in Karakoram, on the border between Pakistan and China, will be blocked by the authorities of the People’s Republic of China from December to March inclusive, The Dawn agency reported on November 12, citing the text of a notification issued by the People’s Republic of China.
This decision was reportedly announced in China almost a month after the joint statement by Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar and Chinese President Xi Jinping that the step will operate throughout the year.
The notification says that under the “Traffic Management Measures at Crossing Points”, China and Pakistan at the diplomatic level will have to make amendments and sign an agreement on border points and traffic management system to keep the crossing of Khunjerab throughout the year.
“Until the State Border Administration of the People’s Republic of China issues an official notice, Khunjerab Port will continue to operate in seasonal customs clearance mode with a break from December to March.”the notice says.
Recall that, according to the agreement signed between China and Pakistan in 1985, the Khunjerab Pass is closed from December to March inclusive, since movement through it during this period is complicated by heavy snowfall.
The pass is the highest border checkpoint in the world and connects the Gilgit-Baltistan Agency in Pakistan with the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China. Its height is 4655 meters above sea level.
According to local sources, after the first snowfall on November 11, the snow cover on the Khunjerab road was more than 15 cm, while on the Pakistani side, snow removal equipment was not working due to which cars were trapped. on the pass for many hours after snowfall in a traffic jam.
