“The President of the Republic denies that he invited anyone, namely the Governor of the Bank of Portugal, to head the government before hearing the political parties with parliamentary representation and the Council of State and deciding on the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic also denies that he authorized anyone to contact anyone for this purpose, including the Governor of the Bank of Portugal,” says a note published on the website of the President of the Republic.
The governor of the Bank of Portugal, Mário Centeno, said this Sunday that he is “very far from making a decision” on the proposal “to reflect and consider the possibility of leading the government” made by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister. The statements were made to the North American edition of the Financial Times.
“I have received an invitation from the president and prime minister to think and consider the possibility of leading the government,” he said.
