Yahav Winner, an Israeli director, was one of the fatal victims of the October 7 Hamas attack. He had just made a short film called “Boy,” inspired by the death of his childhood best friend’s father, who died in front of him in 2008 when a Hamas rocket hit the Gaza Strip.
But just as “The Boy” was about to be released, Winner also died at the hands of Hamas. The man was killed on October 7 in an attack in southern Israel, at Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where he lived with his wife Sheili Atari and their young daughter Shaya.
The family took refuge in the security room. Atari and Shaya managed to escape from the military because Yahav Winner remained behind, holding a window that prevented the attackers from entering.
“We exchanged glances a little, didn’t even say goodbye for long. He pushed the window with it, and I ran away with the child, without shoes, nothing with me,” Atari told Reuters.
A few days later, Atari learned that Winner had died near that window.
Five weeks after the director’s death, The Boy is shown in Tel Aviv.
Atari and Winner attended film school together. Winner served as director and Atari as editor.
Shaylee Atari is still editing “Legends of the Kibbutz,” her husband’s fifth and final film, which they finished filming shortly before his death.
