The United States on Tuesday announced its third round of sanctions on people and organizations linked to the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, following an unprecedented attack on October 7 in Israel.
The US State Department said in a statement that this third round of sanctions targets “other officials and supporters of the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS) and Palestinian Islamic Jihad” not included in the previous ones and also related to the “October 7 terrorist attacks against Israel.”
One of them is Akram al-Ajouri, who, in addition to being sanctioned, was also classified by the State Department as a “specially sanctioned global terrorist” for “being the leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (JIP).” Ajouri is JIP’s deputy secretary-general and leader of its armed wing, the Quds Force.
The Treasury Department also targeted seven individuals and two entities that supported or acted on behalf of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad, focusing on money transfers from Iran to the Gaza Strip, where Hamas, long classified as a terrorist organization by Washington, is based authorities since 2007.
“Iran’s support, primarily through its Revolutionary Guards unit, enables the terrorist activities of Hamas and JIP, including through the transfer of funds and the provision of both weapons and operational training,” the statement said.
According to US diplomacy, “Iran trained JIP fighters in the production and development of missiles in Gaza, and also funded groups that provide financial support to militias associated with JIP.”
“We are taking these actions in coordination with the United Kingdom to protect the international financial system from abuse by Hamas and its supporters,” the US State Department said, vowing to continue working with its partners and allies “to eliminate Hamas’ terrorist financing channels.” “
On October 7, Hamas militants carried out an attack on Israeli territory unprecedented in scale since the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, wounding about 5,000 and taking more than 200 hostages.
In response, Israel declared a war to “eradicate” Hamas, which began with cuts in supplies of food, water, electricity and fuel in the Gaza Strip and daily bombings, followed by a ground offensive that encircled Gaza City.
The war between Israel and Hamas, which entered its 39th day on Tuesday and continues to threaten to spread throughout the Middle East region, has already left more than 11,000 people dead in the Gaza Strip, most of them civilians, with 28,200 injured and 3,250 missing without a trace. ruins and more than 1.6 million people have been displaced, according to the latest report from local authorities.
