The National Nurses Union is holding a 24-hour national strike today

The National Nurses Union (SNE) began a 24-hour strike this Monday at 8:00 am due to the “lack of response and unwillingness of the Minister of Health to begin the negotiation process” with professionals.

In a statement, SNE accused the government of failing to respond to the “serious challenges faced by patients” as well as “the president’s calls for the health minister to meet with industry unions.”

Therefore, “given the apparent lack of response and the unwillingness of the Minister of Health to begin the negotiation process with nurses,” the SNE called for a national strike, “to which new forms of struggle will be added.”

The nurses are demanding “negotiations of a global collective agreement applicable to nurses and a revision of the salary schedule.”

The SNE states that “most nursing demands relate to protecting the quality of care and patient access to timely and quality health care” by offering “decent working conditions, public service planning and organization, and sound human resource management policies.” , with “increased response capacity, from primary care to hospital admissions, emergency services, operating rooms and the national integrated continuum of care network.”

SNE asks nurses to “report all situations of potential clinical safety that could cause harm or cost their lives,” advising them to file “reporting statements to the Nursing Order” and advising them not to provide services in situations where clinical safety is lacking, in accordance with their ethical rules.

On Wednesday, Health Minister Manuel Pizarro said the government was exploring terms for renegotiation with medical unions, acknowledging that while it is working at full capacity, “it cannot look to the future the same way during a political crisis.” “

On Tuesday last week, a government official said it was closing the pending files and received information from the Portuguese Nurses Union (SEP) on Tuesday about reclassifying nursing careers, an issue the government said was already in the works. negotiation stage.
