Six people arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnapping in Maputo province

Six people have been detained on suspicion of involvement in the attempted kidnapping of Mozambican businessman Junid Lalji on the 8th, the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernik) said today.

Sernica’s representative in Maputo province, Enrique Mendes, told a press conference that six men faked a car accident to ram Lalji’s car and try to kidnap the businessman on the 8th of this month.

“In this chase this car [dos alegados autores da tentativa de rapto] According to Mendez, he crashed into a stationary obstacle somewhere in the Hanhane area, and the victim managed to safely reach his company.

Junid Lalji owns a transport company with a significant fleet of trucks and is the owner of the Black Bulls football club. On Friday, unknown assailants kidnapped a Mozambican businessman with ties to the automotive sector, Maputo police spokesman Leonel Muchina told Lusa.

“I confirm the fact of the abduction, but we are still investigating the details related to the event,” Muchina said, without providing details. More than three weeks ago, a young 26-year-old woman of Portuguese origin from Mozambique was abducted by three armed men in Maputo as she left her home and remains captive to this day.

On the 9th of this month, Mozambican police arrested two men who intended to kidnap a businessman in the capital.

On the 8th, Mozambican police arrested two men who intended to kidnap a businessman in the capital. According to the corporation, the kidnappers had a list of people to kidnap.

Two cars were also seized from the two men and “images of several victims of kidnappings that occurred after the execution” were obtained in a kidnapping foiled by Mozambican police on Thursday.

Some cities in Mozambique, mainly provincial capitals, have been hit again by a wave of kidnappings since 2020, mainly targeting businessmen or their families.

Mozambican Prime Minister Adriano Maleian announced in parliament last May that agents had already been selected to work in a special unit to combat kidnappings affecting the country’s main cities.

According to a report presented by the head of the Mozambican government at the time, 28 cases of kidnapping have been reported in Mozambique since 2021, of which “15 have been fully clarified.”
