A Brazilian priest was arrested Friday on charges that he masterminded a million-dollar scheme to steal public funds from a hospital he ran in João Pessoa, Paraiba state. Egidio de Carvalho Neto is suspected of embezzling more than 140 million reais (the equivalent of more than 26 thousand euros) over the past ten years.
According to the portal G1the religious man led a boastful life and owned more than 29 luxury properties. in Paraiba, Pernambuco and Sao Paulo. It is believed that he spent at least one hundred thousand reais (18 thousand euros) a month to maintain his lifestyle.
During the investigation, authorities discovered art, luxury brand clothing and bottles of wine worth more than two thousand reais (equivalent to 400 euros) in Egidio’s possession. In one of the houses, police also found nine dogs, each of which would be worth about two thousand euros.
Father Egidio led Padre Ze Hospital from 2012 until September of this year. Since 2013, he is believed to have masterminded a scheme to steal government resources, dubbed “The Return.”
In addition to the parish priest, the administrative director of the hospital department and the head of the treasury were also arrested.
