An Italian court has sentenced more than 230 defendants in one of the largest anti-mafia trials. The case was directed against the Calabrian organized crime group ‘Ndrangheta.
More than 330 bandits and their associates were accused of extortion, drug trafficking and robbery. The trial lasted almost three years, and the charges were announced this Monday.
The heaviest sentences received by Calabrian mafia leaders Saverio Razionale and Domenico Bonavota, both were sentenced to 30 years in prison.
“These decisions mean that Calabria is free of a criminal gang,” said one of Italy’s most prominent judges, Nicola Gratteri, as quoted by Reuters.
Among those convicted is a former Italian deputy. Giancarlo Pittelli, a member of the center-right Forza Italia party, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for mafia conspiracy.
