Man sentenced to prison for attempted murder in San Miguel

The Central Civil and Criminal Court of Ponta Delgada sentenced a man to eight years and six months in prison for two attempted murders and possession of a prohibited weapon, the Azores district prosecutor’s office said.

According to information posted on the prosecutor’s website, the events took place in the parish of Pico da Pedra on the island of São Miguel on March 7, 2023, when the defendant, “armed with a machete and a hammer,” was physically attacked. his relatives at their residence.

According to the court, the man was unable to take his own life only because a neighbor appeared at the scene and prevented him from doing so.

The accused “lived in marriage with the daughter of the offended person” until May 26, 2021, when the woman “left home” with three children.

The man “never came to terms with the break-up” and was convinced his partner’s parents “caused the break-up and encouraged her” to file a domestic violence claim against him, the court heard.

On May 19, 2023, the defendant was indicted and charged with the crime of aggravated domestic violence and rape against his partner.

Now the court sentenced him to a single sentence of eight years and six months in prison, as well as payment to the victims, “especially defenseless people” due to their age and state of health, compensation in the amount of 7610.00 euros and 5000 euros. , 00 euros.

The application of a prison sentence was justified by the court taking into account “the gravity of the facts, the personality of the defendant, direct and serious intent and the high requirements for general and special prevention.”

The decision also took into account the “inflicted bodily harm” and “psychological suffering” of the victims, as well as the “high degree of guilt” of the defendant, who “acted with direct intent” and with “emphasis of indifference to the value of life”, as well as a “lack of remorse and self-criticism ”, manifested in the way the man tried to “apologize and evade responsibility.”

The investigation into this case was carried out by the Ribeira Grande Prosecutor’s Office (MP) of the Department of Investigations and Criminal Cases of the Azores, with the assistance of the Department of Criminal Investigations of the Azores Judicial Police (PJ).

The accused is in custody.
