The European Parliament (EP) has adopted recommendations for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai that call for an end to fossil fuel subsidies at national, European Union (EU) and global levels.
The text, approved by 462 votes in favour, 134 against and 30 abstentions, represents the mandate that the European Parliament delegation undertakes at COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which it is attending from 8 to 12 December, where progress will be made in applying the Paris Agreement .
The resolution voted on calls for an end to all subsidies – direct and indirect – to fossil fuel subsidies “as soon as possible, but no later than 2025,” according to the statement.
MEPs also support the global goal of tripling the use of renewable energy and doubling energy efficiency by 2030, as well as achieving a tangible and rapid transition away from fossil fuels.
The 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) is taking place in Dubai from November 30 to December 12.
