
The Honolulu Board of Water Supply has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Navy for damages caused by the release of toxic fuel at Red Hill, the Department of Transportation’s Stars and Stripes newspaper reported Nov. 22. US Defense
The Honolulu Water Board announced Tuesday that it has submitted a $1.2 billion claim to the U.S. Navy to reimburse the agency for its response to this catastrophic event.– indicated in the message.
The lawsuit was filed under the US Federal Civil Claims Act in connection with massive fuel leaks that occurred at the Red Hill bulk fuel storage facility in 2021.
Previously, Honolulu Water Board Chief Engineer Ernest Lau said the US Navy was responsible for a massive environmental crisis caused by emissions of oil and other hazardous substances that occurred at the Red facilities Hill.
Recall that at the end of November 2021, more than 90,000 liters of fuel leaked into the US Navy’s water supply, which served approximately 93,000 people on Oahu, including military and civilian families.
