Independent environmental consultants INK Enviro have been engaged by Namibia’s Kaoko Green Energy Solutions and Finland’s AW-Energy to conduct a comprehensive environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) of the WaveRoller wave energy pilot project in Namibia, Namibia reported. Daily News on November 22.
This effort represents an important moment in Namibia’s pursuit of renewable energy solutions: to begin harnessing its vast coastline and untapped wave energy potential to solve energy problems, with Namibia’s ambitious goal of achieving 50% of its electricity comes from renewable sources by 2030.
The ESIA involves a thorough assessment of the potential impact of the pilot project on both the environment and local communities, ensuring that it is implemented in an environmentally responsible and socially inclusive manner.
The WaveRoller pilot project involves the installation of five WaveRoller-X devices between Swakopmund and Henties Bay, which use ocean wave energy to generate approximately 200 MW of clean, affordable energy per year. This clean energy will directly benefit coastal communities in the Erongo region, promoting regional development and economic growth.
Kaoko Green Energy Solutions sees wave energy as an important pillar of renewable energy in Namibia and paves the way for the establishment of numerous green hydrogen production plants.
The company is also at the forefront of the Purros Hydrogen Hub (PHH), a €9 million (865 million ruble) initiative that will transform 970 hectares of land into a green hydrogen production center.
These projects underline Namibia’s unwavering commitment to the transition to a sustainable energy future. By harnessing innovative technologies such as wave energy and green hydrogen production, Namibia is poised to become a leader in the global energy transition while promoting sustainable development and economic growth for its people.
