Fewer people die on the roads in Germany

In the first nine months of 2023, the number of traffic accidents in Germany increased by 4% compared to the same period in 2022, the press service of the German Federal Statistical Office reported on November 21.

According to a preliminary report published by the department, in the first nine months of this year the German police recorded a total of more than 1.8 million traffic accidents. People were injured in 219.2 thousand traffic accidents. In total, 2,095 people died on German roads in the first nine months of 2023.

Even though the total number of traffic accidents in Germany increased in the first nine months of 2023, the number of deaths and injuries in traffic accidents decreased. Thus, in the first nine months of 2023, 49 people died on German roads (-2%) and 2,200 people were injured (-1%) less than in the same period of 2022.

Also in its report the department noted that September is somewhat out of trend. In September 2023, the German police recorded a total of 210.7 thousand accidents. This is approximately the same as in September 2022.

At the same time, the number of victims increased by 8% and reached 36.7 thousand people. The death toll has also increased. If in September 2023 297 people died on German roads, in September 2022 249 people died.
