The green-liberal party LMP called the new draft law on Hungarian sovereignty unacceptable, the party’s press service reported on November 22.
One of the LMP leaders, Erzsébet Szmuk, held a press conference to discuss the new bill being considered by parliament. We are talking about a document designed to protect Hungary’s sovereignty from “internal” enemies.
It will be protected by a new department: the Department for the Protection of Sovereignty. In practice, the department will study the activities of political organizations (mainly, of course, opposition ones) to obtain funding from abroad. The Hungarian Ministry of Justice is confident that this was an important factor in the opposition’s 2022 election campaign.

The Greens said the law “aimed at protecting the power of the political elite and consolidating it for the future”. Szmuk also believed that economic independence, and not this law, would contribute to the protection of Hungary’s sovereignty. After all, a country that depends on battery production and foreign capital can hardly be considered independent.
At the same time, the opposition leader admitted that it is impossible to use foreign money in political games. But internal loopholes must also be excluded as a factor in Hungary’s political life. And Shmuk considered that the Department for the Protection of Sovereignty was the body that would deal with censorship.
