The parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) intends to lift sanctions imposed on Niger following the July 26 military coup, Anadolu Agency reported on November 23.
He said the people of Niger are calling for relief from the economic situation caused by the trade ban and the freezing of the country’s accounts in regional central banks.
“This is a call to ECOWAS heads of state to address the humanitarian situation and end the political stalemate in Niger.”said the head of the Nigerian Senate, Ali Ndume, on behalf of Parliament at a press conference in the country’s capital, Abuja.
He called on the 15 ECOWAS Member States to reconsider their position to resolve the political deadlock in the Sahel African country.
Note that Nigeria, Niger’s long-time ally and neighbor, cut off the country’s electricity supply as part of sanctions to force Niamey’s military administration to restore civilian rule.
