The Cusco region and its surroundings in Peru may face a shortage of drinking water in the coming days due to the decrease in water levels in the Piuray Lagoon, said the head of the Piuray Ccorimarca micro-basin, Leonardo Condori. This was reported by Exitosa Noticias magazine on November 21.
The decrease in water levels worries surrounding communities in the Chinchero region, in the province of Urubamba. Condori pointed out that the drop in levels has already reached the water intake, which supplies water to Cusco through the company EPS Seda Cusco. Despite recent rain, there has been little increase in flow and there is an agreement to close La Boca if water levels drop further.
Declining water levels in the Piuray lagoon, which supplies water to 30-40% of Cusco’s population, has caused shortages even for local residents demanding emergency measures. In this regard, a group of neighbors went to the capital of Peru, Lima, to talk with the authorities.
While they seek technical solutions with the municipality of Cusco, they also demand that Seda Cusco comply with the agreements by reforesting the surrounding communities.
Although heavy rainfall occurs in the Amazon region of Cusco, in the province of Urubamba, where Piuray is located, it is sporadic, aggravating the water level situation.
Let us remember that the water level of Lake Titicaca, the largest in South America, has fallen to its lowest historical level. In this regard, the Peruvian city of Puno warned that the situation could become critical for the region. On October 3 in Bolivia, the Huatahata hydrological station returned a value of 2.92 meters. “This is seven centimeters below the all-time low.”said John Chura, representative of the hydrological department of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Service of Peru. According to him, the water level in the lake decreases by 1 to 3 centimeters per week. As of October 3, this was the lowest level since periodic inspections began in 1984.
