Climate activists form human chains and occupy abandoned buildings against the expansion of lignite mines in Germany. The goal is to prevent the demolition of the village to extract this type of fuel, considered the enemy of the climate.
Some of the demonstrators even dug trenches to bury themselves, while others hung from wooden tripods.
German police on Tuesday began dismantling barricades and forcibly dragging out activists protesting the expansion of the Harzweiler mine, Reuters reported. However, authorities say some protesters threw rocks and Molotov cocktails.
The war in Ukraine and after Russia cut off gas supplies to Europe, the German government had to change the course of energy policy. As a result, the lignite industry, which was previously shut down, will have to be reactivated to generate energy.
Environmental activists believe that the expansion of the mine will lead to the release of huge amounts of greenhouse gases.
