Sergei Mironov, 70, the leader of a Russian political party and political ally of Vladimir Putin, has adopted a two-year-old girl kidnapped in Ukraine in 2022. The child was taken by the woman to whom Sergei Mironov is married, according to BBC.
The girl, originally named Margarita, is one of 48 people missing from a Kherson regional orphanage and of 20,000 children captured by Russian forces when they took control of the Ukrainian city in early 2022.
In accordance with BBCRecords show the child’s identity was changed in Russia. Mironov refuses to answer the charges arising from the investigation, but on one of his social networks he criticized the attacks of false information that targeted his family and himself.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for President Vladimir Putin on charges of illegally deporting Ukrainian children to Russian-controlled territory with the intention of removing them from the country in early 2023. In its defense, the Russian government says it is not deporting Ukrainian children, but rather evacuating them to protect them from war.
