Collective negotiations have failed and strikes will continue, German railway workers’ union GDL said, German news portal 1&1 reported on November 24.
The wage dispute between German rail operator Deutsche Bahn and the GDL union has continued to escalate. It will not be possible to reach a compromise in the near future, which will have a negative impact on passengers.
GDL president Klaus Weselski announced that the union will organize new strikes in rail transport. Wezelski has not yet announced the exact dates of future strikes.
Deutsche Bahn board member Martin Seiler said the GDL union had rejected the proposal for a three-week Christmas truce. “We specifically proposed to the GDL that a Christmas truce be held between December 15 and January 7.”Sailer said, noting that GDL did not accept a truce.
Wezelski did not mention a possible Christmas truce in his statement. He previously reported that GDL would not strike over Christmas, without specifying which period he was referring to.
Voting by GDL members on the issue of indefinite strikes is ongoing and results are expected by the end of December. If 75% agree to an indefinite strike, then the GDL can use this pressure method in a wage dispute.
Let us remember that a week ago GDL paralyzed the work of an important part of rail transport throughout Germany with a 20-hour warning strike. As a result of the strike, around 80% of long-distance train services were cancelled.
