Former Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius, sentenced to 13 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, will be released early on January 5, 2024. Sky News reported this on November 24.
The South African Parole Commission, after making this decision, granted the athlete’s request.
Recall that Pistorius shot his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day 2013 through the bathroom door of their home in Pretoria. As the killer later explained, he believed there was a burglar in the bathroom.
In 2014, the court sentenced Pistorius to 5 years in prison for murder and he was soon released under house arrest.
A year later, after an appeal by the prosecution, the murderer was charged with premeditated murder. By court decision, Pistorius was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Oscar Pistorius was born with bone defects in both legs. At the age of 11 months, he had both feet amputated below the knees and later fitted with prosthetics. In short distance running, the athlete became a six-time champion of the Summer Paralympic Games.
