Nuclear refueling at the floating nuclear power plant began in Chukotka

Nuclear refueling at the floating nuclear power plant began in Chukotka

Loading of nuclear fuel into the reactor of the floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) in Pevek began on November 25, the Chukotka news agency reported.

“During the nuclear refueling work, all necessary measures were taken to comply with radiation safety requirements. Before loading into the reactor, each of the 121 fuel elements underwent strict acceptance control. “All assemblies, after careful review by specialists, will be sequentially placed in the reactor using automated crane equipment.” — said the chief mechanical engineer of the floating nuclear power plant, Alexey Fedotov.

According to the chief physicist of the station, Maxim Shamambaev, the radiation background is at the level of the natural background of the area. Fuel loading will be complete by the end of December. The next nuclear fuel replacement at the reactor facility located on the left side of the FPU Akademik Lomonosov is planned for 2024.

“Akademik Lomonosov” is a Russian floating nuclear power plant of project 20870, located in the port of Pevek (Chaunsky district, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug), the northernmost nuclear power plant in the world.

The floating power plant consists of a floating power unit (FPU), a land site with structures that ensure the supply of electrical and thermal energy to consumers, as well as hydraulic structures that ensure safe parking of the FPU in the water area .

The project has been implemented since 2007; The first floating nuclear power plant in the series entered commercial operation on May 22, 2020.

The floating thermonuclear plant is designed to produce electrical and thermal energy. Floating power plants can also be used to desalinate seawater (an estimated 40 to 240 thousand m³ of fresh water per day).

The floating power unit is designed to operate as part of a low-power thermoelectric nuclear power plant and provides, in nominal mode, the supply of 60 MW of electricity and up to 50 Gcal/h of thermal energy to coastal networks for heating. water.
