The cause of the massive screams in the Astrakhan sky were whooper swans, the press service on the website of the Astrakhan Museum of Local Lore reported on November 26.
The Astrakhan Delta has seen a growing influx of vocal birds, including whooper swans, known for their loud songs, especially in flight. November is the peak month to collect them.
The Astrakhan Biosphere Reserve regularly counts birds, including recent observations at the Damchiksky and Obzhorovsky sites. The shallow waters of the Volga Delta provide important habitat for waterfowl and serve as a valuable site for extensive colonies that begin to form in early September.
Not only noisy swans, but also gray geese, great and little cormorants, Dalmatian pelicans and great egrets choose the Volga delta during autumn migration.
Most birds spend the winter in the Astrakhan region. Choosing it for its richness in foods, among which the cattail, valisneria, bramble, hornwort and especially the rhizomes and nuts of the lotus stand out.
