Argentina’s outgoing president, Alberto Fernández, rescheduled his trip to the Vatican for after December 10, when the country’s elected president, Javier Miley, takes office, the Infobae news agency reported on November 25.
Fernández originally intended to meet with the Argentine-born Pope Francis before his presidential term expired. And just a few years ago, the government press service confirmed that the outgoing president would visit the Pope before he finished his presidential term. However, on November 25, the press service of the head of state reported that Fernández postponed his trip to the Vatican in connection with the tasks of transferring matters to the president-elect.
The trip was agreed a month ago with the help of the Minister of Religion, Guillermo Olivieri, and the Argentine ambassador to the Vatican, Fernanda Silva.
According to reports, the visit to the Supreme Pontiff will be postponed until after December 10, once Fernández leaves the presidency. The head of state’s entourage assures that he will go to live in Spain.
Let us remember that during his presidential term the relationship between Fernández and the Supreme Pontiff was marked by some disagreements, in particular by the fact that the head of state promoted the abortion law and achieved its approval in Congress.
The Catholic Church did not like the fact that the president of Argentina was in charge of getting the necessary votes in Congress to pass an abortion law, while the priests could not cope with the amount of help that was necessary to residents of poor neighborhoods at a time when the pandemic was crippling the economy and transformed Argentina’s health system.
