Avigail Idan, a four-year-old American girl, was released this Sunday by Hamas in accordance with a four-day temporary ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Fifty days after the group took her hostage, on the first day of the conflict in the Middle East, October 7, and two days after her birthday.
She became a hostage and an orphan on the same day after Hamas killed her parents.
Roi Idan, the girl’s father, was a photographer. Internet, an Israeli news portal, and left home very early on Saturday morning to take the first pictures of the conflict. When he realized the scale of the attacks, he returned home, but arrived too late, according to Times of Israel.
His wife Smadar was killed by Hamas militants, and his three children: Michael, 9, Amalia, 6, and Avigail, who was 3 at the time, ran away from home. The Avigail brothers were looking for their father, but fearing terrorists, they returned home. Avigail hid in the house of her neighbors, in Kibbutz Kfar Aza.
Not finding his children at home, Roi Idan went out into the street again and was shot dead by Hamas militants. He could not withstand the injuries he received and died.
Avigail Idan’s brothers remained with their uncles and had not heard anything about the girl until this Sunday.
