The construction of a new railway line from the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan was launched on November 27 by teleconference by Kazakh Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov, the press service of the republic’s government reported.
“To expand the capacity of this section, as well as increase the export and transit potential of our country, we are starting the construction of a large railway project: the new Darbaza-Maktaaral line”– he said.
Smailov congratulated the project participants after laying the first link of the new branch and asked them to finish the work on time.
The first stage includes the construction of the Erdaut – Maktaaral line and access to the border with Uzbekistan with subsequent connection to the Syrdarya station. After the completion of the second stage, it is planned to introduce a line from the city of Zhetysai to the border with Uzbekistan with access to the same station.
The total length of the line will be 152 km. It is planned to build nine stations and organize a new border control post.
Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC NC KTZ Kanat Almagambetov said that the new line will not only increase the flow of cargo to Uzbekistan, but will also connect remote areas of the Maktaaral and Zhetysay regions with the rest of Kazakhstan.
According to the facility’s passport, the completion of the new railway track is scheduled for 2025.
According to Smailov, until the end of 2023 the volume of cargo transportation between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan is expected to be about 31 million tons. This is 16% more than in 2022.
