Three young men of Palestinian origin were shot dead in Burlington, near the University of Vermont, in the northeastern US, police said on Sunday, but did not rule out the possibility that it was a hate crime.
Two of the injured were in stable condition, but the third suffered “much more serious injuries,” John Murad of Burlington police said in a statement.
The three, all in their 20s, were walking while visiting the home of a family member of one of the victims during the Thanksgiving holiday when they encountered a white man with a firearm, he continued. The victims were reportedly speaking Arabic when they were attacked.
According to Reuters, 46-year-old Jason J. Eaton, a suspect in the crime, was detained by authorities.
