This Monday, Russian justice ordered the arrest of a representative of the technology giant Meta, banned in Russia since March 2022, for incitement to terrorism.
The Basmanny Court of Moscow approved a preventive measure for Andy Stone under the article of the Criminal Code on propaganda of terrorist activities while carrying out his professional activities.
Stone, whom the Russian Interior Ministry declared a suspect over the weekend, could be sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The decision has not yet entered into force, since the defense appealed to the city court of the Russian capital.
In March, Russia’s Investigative Committee (ICR) accused Stone of temporarily lifting a ban on calls for violence against Russian military personnel on his platforms, considering it a form of political expression against the Russian military campaign in Ukraine.
CIR pledged to provide a legal assessment of the actions of Stone and other employees of the American company as part of the preparation of the criminal case.
Stone said Meta does not allow “credible” death threats against Russian citizens.
Moscow accused the company of allowing death threats to be spread against President Vladimir Putin.
In March 2022, a month after the war began in Ukraine, Russian justice banned Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, classifying it as an extremist organization, a decision that was condemned by the United States. .
