Thirteen people were injured after a severe snowstorm in the Odessa region of southern Ukraine caused power outages in more than 1,600 cities across the country and forced authorities to close more than a dozen highways to vehicles.
The extreme weather comes as tens of thousands of troops take up positions on the front lines of the 21-month war with Russia and there are fears Moscow could attack the power grid with attack flights this winter, according to Reuters. .
“In the Odessa region, eight people received hypothermia and five were injured due to falling trees,” the State Emergency Service reported on Telegram, as quoted by the agency.
1,638 settlements in 17 regions of Ukraine were left without electricity, most of them in the center of Kiev, as well as in the southern regions of Odessa and Nikolaev, State Emergency Service press secretary Alexander Khorunzhiy said at a press conference.
About 1,700 cargo trucks were stuck and 1,130 cars had to be towed through snowdrifts that were up to two meters high in some places, according to Reuters.
The service added that 12 highways remained closed and more than 1,200 emergency responders were involved in the massive clean-up effort.
