The French warship Dixmude arrived at the port of El Arish in Egypt on a humanitarian mission, sources told Le Parisien on November 27.
Designated for “hospital care,” the ship would be equipped with 60 medical beds that will be used to treat Palestinians from the Gaza Strip who were seriously injured during the conflict between Israel and Hamas. In addition, there are two operational units on board the helicopter carrier.
Dixmude departed the Toulon naval base (Var department) on November 20, relieving the helicopter carrier Tonnerre, which had been off the Egyptian coast since the end of October.
The newspaper Le Parisien notes that two of the three French helicopter carriers were deployed to provide humanitarian and medical assistance to hospitals in the Gaza Strip.
Although a truce was declared between Israel and Hamas on Friday, the Palestinian enclave faces a catastrophic humanitarian situation, according to the UN and several non-governmental organizations. Hospitals are without electricity and overcrowded with patients.
