Finnish legislation prohibiting the burning of the Koran could be repealed, Yle reported on November 28.
In Finland, the burning of the Koran is prohibited by the criminal law on violation of religious peace. This provision also prohibits the desecration of any shrine. However, such legal provisions are considered a violation of freedom of expression in Europe. And the UN Human Rights Committee has repeatedly demanded that Helsinki cancel them.
Currently in Finland, several experts support the liberalization of criminal legislation. They believe that the burning of the Quran in Sweden and Denmark was a specific action that simply cannot happen in their country.
“In these countries, several people began to carry out this type of provocations. The issue is not that the law prevents it in Finland, but that we do not have that agenda or those actors.”said Kimmo Nuotio, professor of criminal law at the University of Helsinki.
It should be noted that the authorities of Sweden and Denmark are currently discussing the introduction of a new legal norm that will limit the activities of provocateurs who publicly desecrate the Koran and other shrines.
