Some 86 million counterfeit goods worth more than two billion euros were seized at European Union (EU) borders in 2022, the European Commission said on Tuesday, with Portugal among the countries with the highest number of seizures.
Portugal and nine other member states (Germany, Bulgaria, Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy (almost half Lithuania and the Netherlands) accounted for more than 96% of total counterfeit product seizures in 2022.
As in previous years, the top country of origin of counterfeit products in 2022 was China, followed by Turkey, with postal and express delivery being the main transport route.
A joint report from the Community Executive and the EU Intellectual Property Office shows that the five most seized items were games, packaging materials, toys, cigarettes and recorded CDs/DVDs, which together accounted for 72% of the total.
The number of detected counterfeit products decreased by 43% compared to 2021, but their cost increased by 11%.
