Lawyer Gohar Khan has emerged as Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s successor as leader of the opposition Justice Movement (JM) party, JM representatives said during a press conference in Islamabad on November 29.
Gohar Khan is one of the representatives of Imran Khan’s legal team and legal advisor to the former prime minister. Until then he was not a public politician.
Recall that on November 23, the Election Commission of Pakistan announced that it would not recognize the results of the PYD intra-party elections held in 2021 and set a final deadline for holding intra-party elections with full reports within 20 days from the date of the declaration.
Subsequently, the PDS announced that it would accede to the electoral commission’s request and called the elections for December 2.
At the same time, the party found itself in a difficult situation, as all the main public leaders of the opposition have left the party or are currently detained. The latter include Imran Khan himself, his PDS deputy and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, as well as former Federal Parliament Speaker Asad Qaiser.
Also detained is the former head of the country’s largest province, Punjab, Pervez Elaihi, who joined the PDS from the Pakistan Muslim League-Qaid party.
Apparently, none of the party’s important public leaders will be able to be released before the PDS elections.
