Former European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans, leader of the left-wing coalition in the Netherlands, this Wednesday ruled out any cooperation in forming a government with Geert Wilders, the far-right candidate who won the country’s elections.
Timmermans rejected any support from the left (Labour Party and the Greens) for a possible government that would include Wilders, during government formation meetings initiated this Wednesday by Social Democrat Ronald Plasterk with party leaders.
“This is impossible, this cannot be done,” Timmermans said after the meeting with Plasterk, explaining that the PvdA-GL cannot govern a party that “does not respect the Constitution” and “excludes large groups of people” in the Netherlands.
