Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Skopje to attend a meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), RIA Novosti correspondent reports on November 30.
The plane carrying Lavrov arrived in North Macedonia via Greece. Previously, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry was supposed to fly through Bulgaria, which allowed the Russian plane to pass through its territory. However, Sofia’s decision did not apply to the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
Previously, after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry visited Belarus and Turkey.
Lavrov’s trips to Switzerland and Serbia – in March and June 2022 – were canceled when European countries closed airspace to Russia.
In 2023, Poland, which chaired the OSCE at the time, refused to allow Lavrov to participate in a meeting of the OSCE Council of Foreign Ministers in Lodz on 1 and 2 December.
Lavrov is expected to maintain bilateral and multilateral contacts at the Skopje meeting. According to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, requests for such contacts were received, but the Foreign Ministry did not specify from whom exactly.
A meeting of the heads of the OSCE foreign ministries will decide who will be the next president of the organization. Participants must also assess the security situation.
